Fees & other FAQs

Fees, Health Insurance, & Payment Options

Psychologist fees are set in accordance with the hourly rate last recommended (2013) by the Ontario Psychological Association which was $225 per hour.  Fees are a reflection of the expertise of a psychologist, time required, overhead expenses, and liability involved.

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length (with the remaining 10 minutes set aside for documentation, scheduling, billing, etc.). All new therapy clients complete an initial intake appointment (typically lasting 90 minutes) which is billed at a flat fee of $300. Additional clinical services provided between appointments (e.g., communication via telephone; requested letter/report writing) which take longer than ten minutes are subject to the hourly rate (pro-rated) and invoiced at 30-minute increments.

Payment is due at the end of each appointment and can be paid via credit card, debit, Interac e-transfer, cash, or cheque. For those clients receiving services virtually, a credit card will be kept on file through the secure, encrypted Jane platform and charged after each appointment.

Health services provided by a registered psychologist are HST/GST exempt. Private psychological services are not covered by provincial health care plans such as OHIP (Ontario) and ACHIP (Alberta).  Many extended health care coverage plans (e.g., Blue Cross) do cover a portion of the cost of seeing a psychologist. Please contact your insurance company directly regarding questions about your specific policy and any restrictions. Upon payment, you will be provided with a receipt to submit to your extended health insurance company for direct reimbursement (if applicable).

FAQs

  • Popple Psychology Services is located in the Holmedale/Lansdowne neighbourhood of Brantford, Ontario, Canada. In-person appointments are available for those families living in Brantford and surrounding area. Please note that, regrettably, full mobility access is not feasible with in-person appointments as the office location requires clients to use a staircase.

Virtual psychology services are offered to families living anywhere in Ontario or Alberta. Appointments are scheduled Monday through Saturday with limited evening and weekend availability.

  • Virtual psychology services, sometimes referred to as telepsychology, are delivered over a secure, encrypted online video-conferencing platform rather than requiring the client and psychologist to be meeting in the same room. Virtual appointments allow access to psychology services from the comfort of your own home. While online-based psychology services have been available for many years now (e.g., to clients living in remote locations), the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to virtual psychology services becoming a very popular (and, for some families, preferred) method of accessing services. Popple Psychology Services offers secure video sessions through a privacy-protected telehealth system called Jane.

  • Not every type of psychology treatment or intervention has been studied when delivered in a telepsychology format. However, a growing body of research has shown that treatment outcomes for telepsychology services are typically similar to outcomes for in-person psychological services. Since the onset of the global pandemic in 2020, virtual psychology services are increasingly being integrated as standard care in a variety of public and private psychology clinics. Many families prefer the numerous benefits of telepsychology services, which may include increased accessibility, convenience, and reduced costs (e.g., those costs associated with travel).

  • Psychologists in Canada are regulated and licensed at the provincial level. Therefore, to qualify for services, a psychologist must be registered with the provincial licensing body that the client is physically located in at the time the psychological service is being provided. As I am a registered psychologist with both The College of Psychologists of Ontario as well as The College of Alberta Psychologists, I offer virtual psychology services to children, adolescents, and families living anywhere in Ontario or Alberta.
